The Story Behind Skins Sexual Health: A Family-Driven Success
Skins Sexual Health was founded by Richie and Jane Bowles, a husband-and-wife team who saw a gap in the market when they noticed men leaving pharmacies without purchasing condoms due to confusing product names and embarrassment.
Recognising an opportunity, Richie, who had recently become unemployed, decided to launch a straightforward and approachable condom brand. Fast forward eighteen years and Skins has grown into a global business employing over 30 people. Remarkably, it remains family-run, with their sons Chris and Matthew playing pivotal roles in the company's success. This strong foundation built on family values and personalised customer service continues to drive the brand forward.

What trends are you seeing in the UK sexual wellness market?
“The UK sexual wellness market is experiencing a significant shift, with consumers increasingly embracing a positive attitude towards sexual health. This growing demand is evident across mainstream, convenience, pharmacy, and vending sectors. Retailers have a substantial opportunity to tap into this trend by stocking Skins products prominently, capitalising on their eye-catching branding and high consumer acceptance. As sexual wellness products, including sex toys, become more common, independent retailers can capture market share by offering a diverse range of Skins products. Various studies show that around 8 in 10 females own a sex toy, and other sexual wellness products are becoming more readily available and have an ever-increasing demand.”

“Societal attitudes towards sexual wellness have become more open, driven by education and media discussion. Consumers now seek products that enhance both sexual health and pleasure. Our product development teams are always ahead of the curve, bringing new and exciting sexual wellness products to the convenience market. We continue to innovate and expand our portfolio, leveraging social media and events to raise brand awareness and meet the growing demand.”

What recent product innovations at Skins have been particularly successful?
“Recent successful innovations include our 12ml travel-sized lube tubes, ideal for impulse purchases and upselling, and our popular condom feeder packs for easy in-store display. Additionally, our Super Excite female pleasure range, featuring a clitoral stimulation gel and bullet vibrator, has been well-received, especially among female consumers who appreciate the approachable branding and product design.”
How does Skins contribute to sexual wellness education and engage with the community?
“Skins actively promotes sexual wellness education through initiatives like donating over 100,000 free condoms to schools and universities. We engage directly with students at events, provide educational content via social media, and offer informative resources on our website. These efforts aim to foster a well-informed and empowered community.”
Can you share any exciting plans or upcoming projects for Skins?
“Upcoming projects include the launch of a delay condom in 2025 and the development of smaller convenience market displays for our popular lube tubes. We are also increasing brand exposure through digital campaigns and influencer partnerships. Skins Sexual Health is encouraging retailers to trial our range of sexual wellness products for the first time if they have not stocked such a range of items previously. We will be running an exclusive offer with VSL throughout August and September, and more details of this can be given by their sales team. Should this be successful, then Skins will be willing to repeat this offer for VSL’s Trade customers as it is paramount for us as a company to help support the convenience sector across the UK.”
